About Strait of Gibraltar traffic
The Strait of Gibraltar is the only natural gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Every ship bound for Southern Europe, North Africa or the Suez route from the Americas and West Africa passes the 14-kilometre gap between Tarifa and Morocco, which makes it one of the busiest waterways in the world with well over a hundred transits a day.
How transits are counted
StraitTraffic counts a transit when a vessel is seen in the Atlantic approaches, then inside the strait between Tarifa and Punta Cires, and then in the Alboran Sea, or the reverse. Ferries between Algeciras, Tarifa and Tangier cross the strait rather than pass through it and are not counted. Official daily totals come from IMF PortWatch and go back to 2019.
