The Bosporus runs through Istanbul and is the only sea link between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. Grain, oil and container traffic from Ukraine, Russia, Romania and Bulgaria all pass through this narrow, winding channel.
How transits are counted
The monitored zone covers the full length of the strait. A transit is counted when a vessel moves from the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara or the reverse; local ferries and harbour traffic that stay inside the strait are not counted.
Data source: AIS via terrestrial receivers. Coverage can be incomplete and delayed; StraitTraffic is not a navigation aid. Methodology
