The Strait of Malacca between Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula is the shortest sea route between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific and one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
How transits are counted
Because the strait is more than 800 km long, StraitTraffic monitors a cross-section off Port Klang that every through-transit has to pass. A transit is counted when a vessel crosses from the Andaman Sea side to the Singapore side or the reverse.
Data source: AIS via terrestrial receivers. Coverage can be incomplete and delayed; StraitTraffic is not a navigation aid. Methodology
