The Strait of Malacca between Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula is the shortest sea route between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific and one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
How transits are counted
Official daily totals come from IMF PortWatch, which counts ships passing the strait from satellite AIS. Because the strait is more than 800 km long, the live map follows the shipping lane off Port Dickson that shore receivers reach; StraitTraffic adds its own transit count there once coverage is good enough to be meaningful.
