The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Roughly a fifth of the world's oil and a large share of LNG exports pass through it, which makes the strait the most watched maritime chokepoint on earth. This page shows live AIS vessel positions and counts every ship that completes a transit in either direction.
How transits are counted
StraitTraffic counts a transit when a vessel is seen on one side of the strait, then inside the monitored zone between Qeshm Island and the Musandam Peninsula, and then on the other side. Tanker traffic is tracked separately from cargo, container, gas carriers and passenger ships, so you can see at a glance whether crude and product exports are moving at their usual pace. Historical daily counts accumulate from the day monitoring started; comparisons with weekly and monthly averages appear automatically once enough history exists.
Data source: AIS via terrestrial receivers. Coverage can be incomplete and delayed; StraitTraffic is not a navigation aid. Methodology
